The prompt at NaPoWriMo today is to write a poem which looks at things from different points of view.
Five Ways Of Looking At The One You Love
When I look at you, I see the best version of myself looking back at me
The person I always aspired to be, yet lacked the perfect role model
Now I am finding what I always thought were my missing pieces
They were, after all, just waiting for you to arrive.
Yet another morning of walking into the bathroom to find
That the cap is left off the toothpaste again
And the sink full of little hairs left over from your shave
I sigh in a combination of annoyance and resignation
As I remind myself that I love you.
As I glance across the room and see the gray which has woven its way into your hair
My mind wishes to know when this old version of you crept in
All of the things which attracted me in the first place are still there
Just masked a little by laugh lines and gray hair.
Just one look at you is all it takes, and it matters not what you are doing
Something as simple as watching you stir honey into your tea can set me off
Into an overwhelming desire to taste your soft lips
And a desire to invite you into the bedroom for a while
Even though it is two in the afternoon.
After all this time my heart still skips a beat
When I hear the sound of your laughter echoing against the walls
Or see that look in your eye that lets me know
That you find me as beautiful as I find you
When I can almost hear the wheels of your brain spinning
As you think of solutions to a project or the ills of society
Still find you smart, fun, nerdy, sexy.
